"The Community Champions programme is young people tacking a social issue which is important to them and becoming catalysts for change within their local communities."

The programme started back in July 2017 and was an opportunity for young people who have already completed the Trust’s flagship Get on Track mentoring programme, to develop their leadership skills further to become agents of social change within their peers, their families and their communities.

Community Champions received funding from Sport England, with young people specifically being tasked to lead social action projects which use sport or physical activity to address an issue within their local community

Overall, 52 Community Champions were trained by our world class athletes and between them they delivered 137 physical activity sessions to 843 members of the community in Leeds, Nottingham, Merseyside, Bristol & Kent alongside our partners in these communities. The video highlights the journey our Community Champions have undertaken and the impact they have had.

While each community champion delivered their own, unique project, at the heart of all the interventions were the six principles of quality youth social action: Reflective, Challenging, Embedded, Youth-Led, Progressive and Socially Impactful.

This gave a strong framework for each champion to deliver sessions that were close to their heart and had a real impact on the communities they are a part of. Examples we have followed were Becki delivering mental health awareness sessions at her local rugby club, Xander delivering circus skills training to connect with a wider community of refugees and asylum seekers in Nottingham and Becca becoming a long term volunteer at a local youth club in the Wirral as a result of the programme. There have been many more inspiring stories amongst all our Community Champions and we know these young people will continue to be leaders and ambassadors in their local communities.

The Trust would like to say a huge thank you to all the partner organisations who were involved with Community Champions, specifically Positive Futures, Youth Fed, YMCA, Learn by Design and WeSport.
