Get on Track for Employability is our personal, social and emotional development programme led by our world class athlete mentors. Over a period of six months we worked intensively with young people aged 16-25 who are residents of Sanctuary Supported Living accommodation in Brighton, Weston-Super-Mare, Hartlepool and Banbury.

The programme we delivered in partnership with Sanctuary aims to specifically focus on developing the skills and attributes needed for the young people to enter or return to the workplace and help move towards a more independent life. As well as preparing for the world of work the young people, supported by Sanctuary Supported Living have gained ASDAN and First Aid qualifications and have undertaking activities such as rock climbing, sailing and high ropes adventures to escape their comfort zones and truly build confidence.

Over the course of the programme, eight of our athlete mentors supported 38 young people across the four locations. We're really pleased that at the end of the delivery, 13 of those young people were in education, training, or employment but the success of the collaboration didn’t end there.



Across all our programmes we use the (Short) Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (S)WEMWBS on all transformational programmes to measure change in mental wellbeing.  

We were pleased to see rises in mental well-being, with scores on the scale rising from an average of 20.9 at the beginning to 22.7 by the end - close to the national average of 23.6.

Similarly, we also measure self-efficacy using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE). Self-efficacy is the belief that you can effectively reach the goals you have, whether that is solving a puzzle, successfully preparing and succeeding in your exam, or dealing with hardship. These scores rose by a whole point across the programme, demonstrating that the young people felt better able to troubleshoot challenges that arose in their daily lives.

Further data was collected from the young people and their athlete mentors to help understand how the programme has improved the young people's confidence, behaviours and attitudes.

Across the board, the responses have been overwhelmingly positive with young people feeling better connected to their community (30% to 36%), more determined to develop their skills in areas they struggle in (38% to 59%) and increased self awareness - understanding their individual strengths and qualities (46% to 73%).

More than statistics and numbers though, it's been the stories and quotes from the young people who took part that show the success of the programme. From Alanta who is planning to become a firefighter, and Ibrahim whose confidence grew thanks to the support of his mentors, to Curtis who is now pusing to gain employment within the sports sector and finally to Tim who described it as the best course he's ever done, these stories show how much this group of young people have developed over the last six months.
