Community Champions is our young leaders offering designed to support and equip young people with the skills and experience needed to become leaders within their communities.

Leadership is crucial for young people in order to learn the necessary skills and attitudes to influence and develop their communities in the years ahead. Our Community Champions programme aims to create highly motivated, skilled and socially responsible young leaders who are enthusiastic about driving forward positive change in their communities and society. Community Champions will address local issues, promote community cohesion, challenge stereotypes and reduce prejudice by working directly with young people in need and the wider community.

As with all our programmes, our world class athletes provide mentoring and guidance and use the skills and experience gained in their respective careers to help and support the young people we work with. All programmes are run in partnership and our work with local partners helps to draw out the significance of local issues that are close to the young people’s hearts.

The Community Champions programme aims to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Improving confidence and self-esteem
  • Improve resilience to improve ability to deal with challenges and recover from difficulties
  • Increase mental wellbeing
  • Improve motivation, skills and knowledge to allow young people to create positive change in their communities
  • Positively impact members of the community through youth-led social action

We achieve the above using a variety of delivery methods including group work, one to one mentoring and specialist interventions. Sessions will include coaching, conflict resolution, mentoring, different leadership styles, learning styles and Mental Health First Aid courses.

Additionally, the Community Champions programme specifically tasks young people to lead social action projects which use sport or physical activity to address an issue within their local community, allowing them to put these skills into practice and work as part of wider teams that can influence and shape the lives of others. Following the programme they will continue to deliver and coordinate legacy projects which support their communities to move more and to tackle key social issues around integration, antisocial behaviour and wellbeing.

You can see examples of previous leadership programmes we have run including our Young Leaders & Ambassadors programme in Northern Ireland and a previous Community Champions programme back in 2017.
