Courtney got into boxing as a kid because he always used to get into trouble. One day his dad took him down to the gym to channel his excess energy. Courtney was 15 when he first started boxing and the first club he boxed for was Islington Boxing Club.

For seven years Courtney was the number one boxer in Great Britain and he travelled across the world to compete. Courtney’s proudest achievement was winning the European silver medal. Courtney has said that every fight he had was the hardest and most draining he had ever had. He said it took literally all the strength out of him, both mentally and physically.

Fry, 25, lost in the opening series at the Sydney Olympics and for the next 10 days watched as his club-mate and friend from Repton Boys, Audley Harrison, reached the heavyweight final and won the gold medal.

In 2008, Courtney began his campaign to win the British light-heavyweight title after winning his eliminator. Courtney fought for the British and Commonwealth title as a professional after only a couple of weeks’ notice. He continued on his trail as a professional boxer even though it seems to be a constant “uphill” struggle battling against promoters and managers alike.

Giving Back to Sport

Since retiring, Courtney has worked for the Merseyside Youth Association helping young people of all backgrounds gain qualifications. Courtney works to inspire young people to participate in community sport. Courtney additionally works as part of the RAMP project because he strongly believes that he is able to help young people find their way in life.
