International 110m Hurdler, Julz, was a keen all-round sportsman from a young age, playing football at a regional level, hockey for his county and 1st XV rugby at national school level. But, unusually, he did not participate in athletics outside of school until the relatively late age of 17.

Taking to the sprint hurdles like a duck to water, he has since made a steep assent within the sport. Winning all national age-group titles indoors and outdoors, as well as earning his first international vest – all in his debut season within the sport. During a successful junior career he has represented Great Britain at World and European Championships, as well as England at senior level.

Having also completed a Law degree at the University of Birmingham, he now plies his craft full time training and competing at Lee Valley National Performance Centre, with aims of establishing himself as a major championship medal contender in the senior Great Britain team.

Giving back

Away from the track Julz is an experienced athlete mentor, currently working both independently and with a number of organisations across the country, to support and inspire young people of all age groups. He regularly undertakes school visits, both as a motivational tool and in support of existing curriculum, encouraging behavioral change through the positive impact of sport, the Olympic values and peer education. Well versed in public speaking, presenting and delivering themed practical sessions, he very much enjoys serving as a positive role model to pupils in this way; himself having benefited from sporting values imparted through primary, further and higher education.

Julz was also elected in March 2010 to the position of Vice President (Sport) at the University of Birmingham’s Guild of Students, and President of its Athletics Union. During which he campaigned to improve sporting and healthy living options available to young adults alongside study. As part of the trustee board, he also worked to increase the opportunities for all 28,000 students to take part in recreational, participative and competitive sport of all levels.
