The first programmes on our two year Sport England funded Get on Track for Wellbeing programmes are coming towards an end. The first groups in Hull, Scarborough, Liverpool and Folkestone are all finishing up, while programmes in these areas as well as Torbay, Dover, Southport and Grimsby continue. 

The programme aims to work with 700 young people in eight coastal towns in England, helping them to become more active and more connected to their local community. The towns chosen are all areas of low socio-economic status that have high levels of inactivity amongst the population.  Over the year long programme, young people work with our elite athlete mentors to try out new physical activities that they might never have done before, develop confidence, resilience and self-esteem, as well as delivering a social action project that benefits their local community.

All our programmes are led by world class athletes who introduce the groups to all kinds of physical activity as you can see from the photos below, all taken on Get on Track for Wellbeing programmes in the last year.

We're pleased to say the programme is working. All the young people who attended the Hull programme are more active now than when they started the programme in early 2019. People like Dan:

I’ve discovered that physical activity, just doing something, can really help when you’re feeling down. Because my mental health is better and I’m feeling more positive, I’ve been able to get more regular work.

Introducing young people to physical activity and helping them to gain confidence can lead to success in all kinds of unexpected areas. When Hannah started Get on Track in Scarborough we're sure she had no idea that a few months later she's be trying out surfing and eventually volunteering at the Wave Project, a surf based charity which helps children with emotional and behavioural problems through surf therapy. 

Before starting the programme, I was literally doing nothing. I was homeless, had nowhere to live and I’d just gone into supported housing.

I would recommend this programme 100% to anyone. It’s improved my confidence so much, I’m more active, I’ve met so many new people and it’s opened up a lot of doors for me.

Former Commonwealth fencing champion Claire Bennett has been leading a group in Folkestone. Over the year they've tried tennis, squash and walk and talk sessions, as well as visiting the Olympic Park in Stratford for inspiration. Talking about Courtney, who attended the programme, Claire said:

Courtney has grown so much in confidence on this programme. She now has a job and is much more physically active now than she was a year ago before she joined Get on Track. She has shown courage, resilience, motivation, work ethic and a real commitment to achieve her goals. I have no doubt she will go on to achieve all of her goals and I am excited to follow her progress. Well done Courtney, you are a super star! 

In the second phase of the programme, we have just started working in colleges such as Folkestone College where athlete mentors like Claire are working with students to increase their activity levels at a time in life when many young people stop taking part in sport and other forms of physical activity.
