On the 11th July, Sarah Philpott will be swimming the 41 miles around the Channel Island of Jersey aiming to raise £5,000 for Dame Kelly Holmes Trust. This amazing challenge will not only raise funds enabling us to support more young people, but is also the lead up to an even more incredible challenge she will be undertaking later in the year.

Sponsor Sarah Today

Sarah is no stranger to sporting challenges. Upon leaving school aged 16, Sarah joined her local triathlon club, where she was mentored by many enthusiastic club members. Before long, she was competing on a world stage, and for six years was a consistent face on the GB Triathlon Team. Sarah knows that the people who inspired, supported and believed in her, are in her mind, the real champions.

Fast forward to the year 2020, and Sarah’s path once again crossed with someone who inspired, supported and believed in her. She met a local swimmer who was in training for swimming the English Channel, a challenge that had always been her life-long ambition. With the onset of the pandemic, Sarah found herself regularly at the beach; watching, learning and building confidence every time she entered the water. Before she knew it, she was physically and mentally training harder than ever before and within five months, successfully swam 21 miles across the most iconic piece of open water in the world.

Now, in the year 2021, Sarah was wondering where will her path lead next? Another swim perhaps, but she felt it needed purpose! Having dealt with depression for over 14 years, Sarah was feeling bewildered about ‘how’ a person with depression can both physically and mentally perform at a high level. Having read her story and listened to her in interviews, Sarah reached out to Dame Kelly Holmes. Sarah knew that Kelly would understand their shared experience, and with that connection, she knew she was in the right place to contemplate her next challenge.

Dame Kelly Holmes Trust creates opportunities and pathways for young people who are facing disadvantage in their lives. Sarah remembers how much support she received as a young adult, and she wanted to do something to both celebrate these people and also to support the next generation.

So, on the 10th July Sarah aims to swim 41 miles around the Channel Island of Jersey with the aim of raising £5,000 for Dame Kelly Holmes Trust enabling the charity to support even more young people. With a support crew of three, she will be boarding the Lionheart to begin the challenge on the 10th and we'll be with Sarah every step - or stroke - of the way.

As mentioned in the introduction, not just satisfied with swimming around Jersey, Sarah wants to take on an even bigger challenge later in the year. Details are still under wraps at the present time, but if anyone wants to find out more and is interested in sponsoring Sarah, please do get in touch with us at [email protected]

We'll be supporting Sarah every step of the way on her training journey and when she boards the boat in July. Follow the story on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
