The Young Leaders Training and Young Ambassadors programme in Belfast is really in full swing now. We caught up with the Young Ambassadors Mal, Steven, Nicole and Lauren as they were planning their social action project for the New Year.

The Young Ambassadors programme enables young people to develop their leadership skills further to become agents of social change and to further good relations for their peers, families and their communities. Delivering a social action project allows young people to put into practice all the skills they have learned throughout the programme so far while also giving back to the community they live, study and work in.

Originally the plan was to deliver a course called Cyber Saturday for young people to learn more about cyber security, online bullying and gaming etc however the group have decided to expand this to become more of a programme that can be delivered as a series of sessions in a school - hence the title of the news piece! There are loads of things that need to discussed, planned and agreed before running something of this scale and the nature of a programme such as this is that this all needs to be led by the young people themselves.

Mal, Steven, Nicole and Lauren all agreed that they needed some extra time to devote to this on top of the normal weekly sessions so have arranged for an away day in January where they can nail down all the essential items, propose a budget and research content for the sessions. Some of the key things that need to be finalised are:

  • Identifying the needs of students, so performing a needs analysis
  • Researching topic areas for the sessions
  • Devising monitoring and evaluation surveys
  • Define learning objectives
  • Devising & proposing a budget
  • Agreeing a name for the cyber programme

The aim is to deliver a pilot in a local school before the end of March before hopefully rolling this out on a wider scale in 2019.

We're going to be following the Young Ambassadors as they deliver their social action project in the New Year and also work with the Young Leaders and other young people on the programme

The Young Leaders Training and Young Ambassadors programme is being delivered by Dame Kelly Holmes Trust in partnership with PeacePlayers International NI on behalf of the Department of Communities.
