Over thirty thousand people lined up to start the Great North Run on Sunday 12th September in Newcastle, among them thirteen people raising funds for Dame Kelly Holmes Trust.

The Great North Run is always an amazing spectacle, with thousands of runners streaming across the Tyne Bridge, the red arrows flying above and supporters lining the steeets to cheer friends and strangers alike. This year, we had the biggest group of people representing and raising funds for the Trust, including six people from our Starting Blocks partners Westfield Health, an athlete mentor Chris Elliott and friends as well as our very own Martin and Pippa from the Trust Team.

Westfield Health

Claire, Chris, Patrick, Claire, Hannah and Richard from Westfield Health all took part on Sunday morning with a view to raising a combined £1,000 for the Trust. As of Monday 13th they had raised an incredible £1,131 between them smasing their target out of the water.

Hannah from Westfield Health said:

So happy and proud of myself. Last year I couldn’t run for 2 minutes and April of this year I could just about run 4km. It’s amazing what the human body is capable of doing. The hills were killers but I loved it. Hardest part for me was the last mile and especially that last 800 metres just seemed to go on forever! Thank you for the support and giving me the opportunity.

The Trust Team

Representing the Trust out on the course were our Fundraising and Events Officer Pippa, our Head of Programmes Martin and Programme Officer Alex's sister Ania! Despite coming back from an injury which meant postponing an Autumn marathon this year, Pippa finished in an amazing two hours and Martin was just ahead, completing his half marathon for his personal Starting Blocks Challenge.

Martin said:

Thirteen years ago I set myself the challenge of completing the Great North Run to break my unhealthy lifestyle.  Then on 12th Sept 2021, as my Starting Block Challenge, I went back to the Tyne to do it all again! It was a really proud moment to cross the finish line with the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust logo on my chest.  You get such a buzz from doing the GNR and so I challenge anyone to give it a go  - it will be brilliant experience!

Athletes and Friends

Our final group of runners were all friends of Chris Elliott, one of our athlete mentors at the Trust. Lauren, Ian and Curtis all completed run along with Chris who we think was the fastest of all our runners in a time of 1.50. Huge thanks to you all for signing up to take part  to raise awareness and money for the Trust.

Curtis, Lauren and Ian at the start line and Chris with Curtis at the end!

With more donations sure to come in, the fantastic runners above have already raised more than £3,000 between them, an incredible amount that the Trust will use to support more young people to develop the confidence, resilience and self esteem needed to achieve in education, work and life

We'd also like to say a very big thank you to Made By Sport for kindly providing these places for the Great North Run and to all the volunteers and staff at Great Run who worked so hard to put this event on.
