Thomas started swimming when he was around five-years-old and from there progressed through local clubs. At age 13, he made the decision alongside his parents that if he wanted to be successful, he would have to move to The City of Cardiff Swimming Club.

This was huge commitment that Thomas made to achieve his goals. He trained twice which required his father to drive 180 miles a day. This travel made school life very challenging but through his determination he still passed all his GCSEs.

With the support of a hugely experienced new coach his hard work began to pay off at aged 15, when Thomas won his first British Youth Championship title.

He then began to be selected for competitions all around the world, picking up medals along the way. He was very successful as a junior swimmer but struggled for a while trying to break into senior waters.

Thomas’ big break came at 20 when he qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing. He took 4 seconds off the British record and became his coach’s 44th Olympic swimmer. From there he went on to compete at various other World and European Championships. In his best year, Thomas was proud to finish ranked seventh in the world.

Giving Back

He has completed his swim teaching qualifications and runs his own swim school at The Celtic Manor Resort. On working as a mentor, Thomas commented: ‘I am very excited to start work as an athlete mentor and hope to motivate young people to achieve their potential with my story of success and triumph but also sacrifice, hard work and determination’.
