football

What was your sport and how did you get into it?

I was a professional footballer for over 20 years. I started my career as a YTS player for Charlton Atheletic where I signed my first professional contract. I then went onto playing for Barnet, Reading and Portsmouth.

I first became interested in football after watching the 1981 FA Cup Final between Man City and Spurs, the reactions of players and the crowd following an amazing goal by Ricky Villia made me believe that if he could do it so could I.

Tell us about the highlights of your sporting career?

There are many highs and lows of the game, my first high was receiving my first professional contract followed by my debut live on tv for which I received Man of the Match. My biggest high would be getting promoted to the Premier League with Portsmouth. I was fortunate to be involved in FA cup finals and playing within the Premier league for numerous years. I also received a MBE for services to football and charity.

What were some of the challenges you experienced and how did you overcome them?

I have experienced the disappointment and frustration of being dropped from the squad/team because new managers didn’t think I was good enough. To overcome this I ensured that my attitude on and off the pitch continued to be one of hardworking determined professional. I was fortunate to have a good support network to keep my focused and positive during those darker moments.

What have been your highlights while working at the Trust?

I have just started my journey with the trust and am excited to build relationships with the team and look forward to supporting young people on their journey.

What do you do now alongside working for the Trust?

I currently work with Christians in Sport mentoring pro footballers. I also work with the LFE delivering mentoring programmes for scholars.

What life advice would you give a young person?

Dream Big and enjoy the journey!!!
